Calling Dick Tracy! Vol. 1

This article is about the character Officer Doherty that has appeared in the Dick Tracy comic strip. For the entry on the real person, see Sgt. Jim Doherty.

Officer Doherty was a uniformed officer in Dick Tracy's Police Department. He had dark hair and a moustache.

The Flakey Biscuits CaseEdit

Officer Doherty was called in to assist with the investigation of the murder of Earl, a delivery truck driver for Flakey Biscuits' company. Doherty reported to the scene of the crime with Mugg the police dog. Mugg quickly detected the presence of cocaine.

PhishfaceEdit

Officer Doherty and Mugg were later present at the arrest of the criminal Phishface, where they aided Tracy (who was still recovering from an injury he had suffered previously).

Other AppearancesEdit

While on patrol, Officer Doherty encountered Sprocket Nitrate at the city train station as she and her brother were preparing to leave the city. He reprimanded her for being barefoot in public, and later reported the interaction. The pair was allowed to continue on their way, as there was not an active warrant for their arrest.

NotesEdit

  • Officer Doherty is based on the real person Sgt. Jim Doherty, the former technical advisor for the Dick Tracy comic strip.
  • It was implied that Officer Doherty was affiliated with the police department's K-9 unit, though he may also have been connected to the Narcotics department.
  • When Doherty appeared in the Sunday, May 15th 2011 strip, he was depicted with a darker, olive complexion. in his subsequent daily appearance, he was colored more pale. The Sunday depiction (coming as it does directly from the strip's creative team) would seem to be more accurate.
