A.R. Mann was a recording industry insider and a sound engineer. He was bald, with short, light-colored hear on the sides of his head. He typically wore eyeglasses.

Mann worked with the criminal Flipside, though Mann was apparently unaware of Flipside's illegal activities.

Re-Discovering Sparkle PlentyEdit

When Flipside expressed a desire to revitalize the career of a favorite singing star from the past, he had Mann reach out to Sparkle Plenty. Mann contacted Vitamin Flintheart, who still acted as Sparkle's agent. Mann was pleased to work with Sparkle, and he introduced her to Flipside.

Flipside and Mann arranged a recording session with Sparkle, where she would record new vocals of her classic songs with modern arrangements and backing music. During the recording session, the Stereo Brothers arrived and conferred with Flipside about their plan to murder Themesong. Sparkle and Mann overheard the conversation and recorded it as evidence. Sparkle then ecused herslef to call her father-in-law Dick Tracy.

When Sparkle returned, she and Mann attempted to stall Flipside in order to give Tracy enough time to arrive. They listened to the music tracks, but Flipside detected the secret recording in the background. Realizing what had happened, Flipside punched Mann, knocking him unconscious. Flipside was prepared to assault Sparkle when Dick Tracy arrived on the scene.

Mann was unconscious during the rest of Tracy and Sparkle's ordeal with Flipside. He eventually recovered and was presumably cleared of any wrongdoing.

NotesEdit

  • The name A.R. Mann is derived from the term "A & R Man", which is a recording industry term for a person that is responsible for talent scouting and overseeing the artistic development of recording artist and/or songwriters. The A & R man also acts as a liaison between artists and the record label or publishing company; every activity involving artists to the point of album release is generally considered under the purview of - and responsibility of - A&R.
